Overhead
Storage Systems

Overhead storage is a gift of
extra storage space. If you have tall ceilings, this is a great place to use for ‘found’ extra square footage of
storage space.
Normally the drop from the ceiling is 16 to 28 inches. This gives
you plenty of space for large items that are not used on a regular basis, like luggage or camping equipment
(seasonal storage). For things that you will use but not in a weekly time frame and you certainly want to keep,
this type of storage is great.
Seasonal
Storage
Camping equipment takes up a lot of room and the good
stuff is fairly expensive. So, when you return from a camping trip, clean all the cooking equipment and
air out your tents and sleeping bags before storing them. Overhead storage works great for this and other
types of bulky seasonal equipment.
To make things even better, once they are aired out, rolled them
up tightly, and seal them in the vacuum seal type bags. The bags do a great job of keeping out dust and critters
that tend to crawl around in the dark corners of the garage. If you have special tools and accessories that
you use just for camping, clean and store them in plastic boxes or vacuum bags as well. Then when you are getting
ready for your next trip, everything is clean and ready for your adventure to the woods, mountains,
coast or river; no matter where you are off to next.
Long Term
Storage
You can also store things for the long term,
such as: tax records, financial information that is out of date (starting with last year’s). You know, ...the
type of things that can be boxed up and sealed until it is time to throw them away. Many people like to use
banker’s boxes for storing this type of paper records, but I prefer using clear plastic file boxes. You can use multiple hanging file folders to hold
monthly or yearly records in the same box. Be sure to mark the boxes clearly so you can see what is in the box
without needing to pull them down from the overhead
storage racks.
You do need to use care when loading and unloading this type of
storage systems. Lifting boxes up a ladder by one’s self can be tricky so be sure that there are two of you around
while doing it.
Once again, overhead storage is really found space. You are
reclaiming space that has been unused and so it is like getting a free storage space that's also close to
home!
